Whiteboards
Interactive whiteboards are a great resource, but too often the experience can be spoilt by poor installation and training which focuses on the 'mechanics' of usage rather than how to enhance learning.
Installation
There are a number of pitfalls to avoid when you think about installing whiteboards, here are some pointers:
- Power - are there existing power points in appropriate places or will new ones be needed?
- Will the interactive whiteboard be replacing a traditional one? There are implications here about training.
- Will you loose display space?
- How flexible will teachers be able to be about arranging the classroom once an interactive whiteboard is installed
- Blinds - will you need to cover windows to reduce glare?
- Projector - is it powerful enough for the lighting in the classroom, pupils need to see the image, but also have high enough light levels to do their own work at the same time
- Height - I've seen too many whiteboards fixed high on the wall out of reach of pupils, mount them low so children can use them easily.
- Network - are you able to connect to the Internet - really a must to get the most out of your equipment?
- Computer - will you have a dedicated computer for use, will it be the teacher's laptop?
- Sound - to make the most of the multimedia experience you will need external speakers
- Cables - will everything be hidden or a potential trip hazard?
Training
Very often interactive whiteboard training concentrates on how to use it, schools also need support in using the technology to enhance learning across the curriculum.
